The West Coast Regional Council are undertaking geotechnical investigations on the Greymouth and Hokitika Stopbanks.
The purpose of the investigations is to confirm what the Stopbanks are constructed of, and assess the ground conditions underlying them. This information will be used in the design of any future upgrades.
The investigation will be undertaken in 3 stages, firstly geophysical investigation work using ground penetrating radar and MASW, secondly cone penetrometer tests using a small drill rig, and finally boreholes will be drilled, and groundwater monitor points installed.
Southern Geophysical Ltd will be undertaking the ground penetrating radar and MASW work.
Ground Investigations Ltd will be undertaking the Cone Penetrometer Tests.
A second phase of drilling work will begin in early February.
The work will undertaken on, and adjacent to the stopbanks. There will be minor, short term disruption to the cycle trails and some of the investigation work will be noisy, typically for short durations.
Initial investigation work will begin on Tuesday February 1, and should be completed by the end of the month. Further Drilling works will be notified, likely early to mid February.
The patience of the community is appreciated, and works will endeavour to cause minimal disruption to pedestrian/cycle and other activity.
