Council has been receiving complaints from the community about people dumping rubbish in the Kotare Domain for some time now and the problem is persisting.
Council also receives various complaints about vehicles and motorbikes driving in the domain, causing damage and creating potholes, puddles and muddy areas. These issues create an unsafe, unsightly environment, and is unpleasant for those who love to use the area.
Last Friday, we completed a clean up and removed large amounts of rubbish from the area. The photos show some of what was cleaned up.
In response to these ongoing issues, we are making some changes that are intended to mitigate the problems at the domain. Activities that cause damage to public property are prohibited.
- No motorised vehicles are permitted within the reserve, this includes motorcycles, quads, and carts.
- Any persons found dumping rubbish and/or causing intentional damage within the area will be fined.
- Council staff will be working with Police and also costs associated with cleaning up rubbish or repairing damage will be recovered from those responsible.
- New signage will be installed at the reserve to reinforce the rules.
Along with the local Runanga community, we want to create a place where kids are safe to play and for all the community to enjoy. The Kotare Domain will soon be undergoing some redevelopment but for now, there will be placement of rock at the top end of Hall Jones St access to prevent vehicles entering the top section of the reserve where people have been dumping rubbish.
Let’s work together. We encourage everyone to respect the reserve, which is there for the enjoyment of all members of the community, and to report any illegal activity by calling us on 03 769 8600 or online via our website here: Service Request/Report a Problem
