Croesus Track Road Repair Moving Ahead
Council is pleased to confirm that road works will soon be underway to repair the major slips on the access road to the Paparoa and Croesus Tracks.
Local provider MBD Solutions has been commissioned to do the work. Under the contract, MBD must complete the works by 21 October 2022. While we anticipate the work to be completed within 2 weeks once work begins, we have put in a contingency timeframe plan to allow the contract some flexibility.
The slips above and below the road are very complex and required specialists to assess the scope of the work required to stabilise the road.
Due to safety concerns, the road has been closed to vehicular traffic since mid August 2022. Walkers and bikers have been allowed to access the road as the impact they have is minimal but it was not safe for larger vehicles to be crossing the slip zone on a regular basis.
Council has progressed with the works, though funding is still being sourced via NZTA. We will continue to work with NZTA to access the funding, but we cannot hold up the work any longer.
Council acknowledges that it is a really important access road and needs to be reopened as soon as possible. The financial implications for local business owners and the impact on visitors to the region are very likely to be compromised further if delays are ongoing. We are well aware of this and want the road back open for the summer season, it is pleasing to know a plan is now in place to enable this.
