The Vikings - captured on Trickies Road

The Vikings: Created by local artist Mark Haldane and located on Trickies Road in Gladstone, this artwork features a Viking boat with Vikings onboard, navigating through the waves—whether on their way to battle or returning. They are on a journey.

"I have lived in Greymouth for over 20 years, in Gladstone, just a stone's throw from Trickies Road, and I have spent more than half that time painting murals around the West Coast. I thought it fitting that a cabinet, located just down the road from my family home, be decorated with my history and the history of many other local West Coast residents."

"This is going to be my final piece of public art. Hence the subject—The Vikings, representing my heritage, and the location of the cabinet, close to my family home for the past 20 years."

In 2010, Chorus began a trial in Auckland to test whether artwork on cabinets could reduce the frequency of tagging. The trial was successful, leading to the expansion of the programme nationwide. Chorus partnered with local councils and community groups to ensure the continuation of this initiative. The main factor in selecting a cabinet for artwork is the frequency of tagging, as murals help reduce cleaning costs. However, other factors, such as community or council requests and involvement, are also taken into account. For the Taylorville project, Mark Haldane's artwork was selected from three submissions in November 2024. Artists were encouraged to explore themes in their designs that celebrate their local communities, tell a story, or simply add a splash of colour to the landscape. Mark's design The Viking's fulfilled every criteria.
