Local artist Stacey Dunnachie has kicked off this year’s Grey District, Chorus Cabinet Art Programme this season with this colourful mural “Family Sticks Together” that reflects iconic images of the Coast.
“This design depicts two pukeko looking out for each other. The weather is clearing to a rainbow which is a common sight on the beautiful West Coast, and you can see mountains in the background, which represent the Southern Alps,” she said.
The mural, located on Hall Street in Cobden, is one of five that will be completed over the coming months. These will bring the total number of cabinets decorated in Grey District to 18.
Mayor Tania Gibson says, “I was really impressed with the high standard of submissions, there were designs ranging from people fishing to a stylised beach scene to a cherry blossom tui, they were all so diverse. Our community is once again set to receive beautiful artworks which lift the spirits, that we can all enjoy and be proud of.
“Each year we have been very fortunate to have talented local artists create these wonderful murals in our streets, I’m looking forward to seeing the manifestation of these latest designs.”
Chorus Stakeholder Communications Manager Jo Seddon says, “It has been great to once again work with Grey District Council to bring artwork to the community.
“Amongst all the beautiful artwork, we received a fantastic rainbow-themed mural that symbolises how people in the past had to hide their true selves but are now able to fly free, that we are all still connected.
“This is a really strong message about how accepting the Grey District community really is. We can’t wait to see all the designs come to life on the cabinets.”
As the weather improves, artists will be out painting their cabinets, so keep an eye out for them.
