Port Facilities
The Harbour
Entrance is across a bar, between breakwaters to cargo wharves on the river and fish unloading wharves/fishing boat berthages in Erua Moana Lagoon.
LINZ Chart NZ 7142 "Greymouth Harbour and Approaches" explains entrance beacons. Depths over the Grey Bar vary depending on weather and river flow. Contact the Port Manager for the latest depth soundings, but a LINZ Navigation Warning is issued if the bar depth is below 2m at Chart Datum.

Port of Greymouth is not currently a compulsory pilotage area and has a vessel limit without a Pilotage Exemption Certificate of 500 gross tonnage. Vessels over 100 gross tonnage and 3m draught should inform, and seek advice from, the Port manager prior to entry.

Dredge
Since May 2021 Port of Greymouth has operated a dredging operation within the port lagoon. This consists of a small bottom dropper barge and an excavator on floating pontoons, with the spoil being deposited in the Grey River. The dredging operation is restricted in its ability to manoeuvre and all vessels entering the port are to keep clear of both dredging vessels at all times. The lagoon will be maintained to 4m depth at Chart datum.
The Flow of the Grey River is directed to clean out the river bar and no dredging of the bar is completed.
