Information on these topics and much more is available on the Never Happens? Happens website. We've outlined some basic information below and we strongly encourage our community to be prepared before it's too late.
In most emergencies, you should be able to stay in your home. You should plan to be able to look after yourself and those in your household for at least three days or more. Consider the following.
Household emergency plan | Everyone should have a household plan in the event of an emergency. You should consider: - Have you earthquake proofed you house?- Who will pick the kids up?- If you can't get home where will you meet or leave a message?- Who is responsible for checking the emergency supplies? |
Essential items - workplace, home and portable getaway kits | - Torch with spare batteries or a self-charging torch (check batteries every three months)- Radio with spare batteries- Wind and waterproof clothing, sun hats, and strong outdoor shoes - First aid kit and essential medicines - Blankets or sleeping bags - Pet supplies - Toilet paper and large rubbish bags for your emergency toilet & toiletries (soap etc) - Face and dust masks - Include important documents in your getaway kit: identification (birth and marriage certificates, driver's licences and passports), financial documents (e.g. insurance policies and mortgage information), and precious family photos. |
Food and water for at least three days | - Non-perishable food (canned or dried food) - check and replace food and water every twelve months- Food, formula and drinks for babies and small children- Water for drinking (at least 3 litres per person, per day) - click here for advice on how to store water - Water for washing and cooking - A primus or gas barbeque to cook on (note gas cooking devices should be used in well ventilated areas) - A can opener |
