Using the Trail
- Note that the Dog Control Act 1996 requires all dogs to be on a leash or under voice control when in public spaces. However, when it comes to the cycle/walk way, Council's Access to Walkways/Cycle Track Bylaw requires ALL dogs to be on the leash when on the track. Breaching this bylaw can incur fines as well as potentially causing harm to other users, eg dogs getting in the way of cyclists.
- It is very important that everyone sticks to the left to leave a clear path for those travelling in the opposite direction.
- No horses or motorbikes are allowed on the track.
- It's a good idea for cyclists to ring their bell when coming up behind other users to warn them they're coming past. As a lot of people use headphones, keeping left is especially important to ensure everyone is safe.
- Please pick up all dog deposits.
If we look out for each other and treat all users with respect by following the rules, the cycle track/walkway can continue to be a great asset to be used by the entire community.
Keeping safe
- Stay in control so you can safely avoid other users and keep yourself intact.
- Ride shared-use tracks in small groups (six to eight people or less) so as not to displace other users.
- Be patient behind slower riders and pull over where practical to let faster riders pass.
- Ride only where permitted - keep off closed tracks, including those that are seasonally closed to protect the surface or minimise conflict with other users.
- Be prepared - take food, water, tools, first aid and warm clothes in case of a change in the weather, an accident or getting lost.
- Do not skid, cut corners or make new lines. Skidding creates water channels that cause erosion.
- Avoid riding in the mud and rain. Both bikes and walkers damage soft, wet tracks.
- Take your rubbish home - leave only tyre prints.
- Clean your bike to prevent spreading weeds.
