Firewood on Road Reserve
Cutting and removal of firewood from Council land or Road Reserve is prohibited
Whilst it may look tempting and easy to get, the cutting and removal of firewood from any Council land or Road Reserve is strictly prohibited. Contrary to popular West Coast belief, the trees on Road Reserve are not a source of free firewood', even if they have fallen naturally. Council have properly trained staff and contractors who are responsible for the safe removal of any trees that pose a risk to road users.
Attention private firewood sellers
People selling 'cut your own firewood' are encouraged to check their responsibilities under health and safety laws. If you are taking money from someone who is then cutting wood on land that you own or are responsible for, then you have also taken responsibility for their health and safety. Should they have an accident whilst on your land, you may well face investigation or prosecution.
If you wish to carry out this type of activity, it is recommended that you talk to WorkSafe first to ensure you fully understand the implications and responsibilities. It would be very unfortunate if someone injured themselves or others on your land.
